A driveway slab that suddenly sits higher on one side is more than an eyesore. It can become a trip hazard, crack further after heavy rain, and make it harder to park or walk safely. So, can tree roots lift driveways? Yes. Roots can push against concrete, pavers, and asphalt as they grow, especially when a mature tree is planted close to the drive.
The good news is that a lifted driveway does not always mean the tree needs to come down. How Tree Roots Lift Driveways

Look for a raised seam between slabs, a hump in the driveway, or cracks that lead toward the tree. You may also see surface roots in the nearby lawn, soil that has lifted along the driveway edge, or roots visible where the concrete has already separated. A driveway gate that starts dragging or a fence panel that no longer lines up can be another clue that the ground in that area is moving.

Why Cutting the Root Is Not Always the Answer
It is tempting to expose the root and cut it out. That can create a bigger problem if the root is large or close to the trunk. Major roots provide support and deliver water and nutrients to the tree. For a replacement section, the contractor may be able to create more room around the root zone or use a layout that avoids pinching large roots against the new concrete. In some cases, a root barrier can help direct future root growth downward or away from the driveway. Barriers are not a guaranteed cure, though. They must be installed correctly and may not be appropriate around every established tree.
A repair makes the most sense when the lifted area is small, the tree has good structure, and there is enough space to alter the pavement without removing critical roots. Keep in mind that replacing concrete directly over active roots without addressing the cause can lead to the same problem again.
When Tree Removal Is the Safer Option
Removal may be the practical choice when a tree is already declining, structurally weak, badly positioned, or causing repeated damage to the driveway. It can also make sense when several large roots are lifting multiple slabs and a lasting driveway repair would require severe root cutting.
Warning signs that deserve prompt attention include a leaning tree, large dead limbs, trunk cracks, mushrooms or decay near the base, and roots that have lifted both the driveway and nearby structures. After a storm, a tree with damaged roots can be less stable than it appears.
